How to Clean Streetwear Hats and Caps Without Warping Them

A good hat can last years if you clean it right. The problem is most people treat all hats the same — and that's how snapbacks lose their shape and beanies shrink to child-size.
Snapbacks and structured caps
Never throw a structured cap in the washing machine. The brim will warp and the crown will collapse. Instead, spot clean with a soft brush and mild soapy water. For sweatbands, wipe with a damp cloth and let air dry completely before wearing.
Dad hats and unstructured cotton
Cotton dad hats are more forgiving. Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent, reshape by hand, and air dry on a form or upside down. Never use a dryer — heat shrinks cotton and damages the brim.
Beanies and knit hats
Hand wash in cold water, gently squeeze out excess water (don't wring), and lay flat to dry. Wool blends will felt and shrink under heat and agitation, so keep it gentle.
Bucket hats
Most bucket hats are machine washable on cold, gentle cycle. Air dry only. The reversible ones should be turned inside out before washing to protect the patterned side.
